Lumpkin County Middle School Outdoor Enrichment
The Yahoola Creek Trails Conservancy is working with the Lumpkin County Middle School to offer outdoor enrichment activities for their after school program. As part of the program they have partnered with the Gold Rush chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU). Henry Bazella, along with several other TU volunteers, developed a session that helps the students understand the sport of Fly Fishing. They provided classroom education with fly tying demonstrations plus outdoor hands-on fly casting. The first session was held on Thursday March 12 with 2 groups that totaled 30 students. The day was an outstanding success and the students were very interested and involved and especially enjoyed the opportunity to go out and do some actual fly casting. The next session will be held on Thursday March 26 at the Lumpkin County Middle School. At this session the students will tie their own flies and continue their casting practice.
A special thanks to the Federation of Fly Fishers, Sierra Club, and Temple Fork Outfitters for their support and donation of five fly fishing outfits to assist TU in the promotion of the sport.
